Rose Mapendo talks to NPR’s Michel Martin about forgiveness in this 2011 interview.
The power of forgiveness can transform and reshape an indivuals present, future, communities, and how one copes with trauma. “Forgiveness is not to change the past, it’s to change the future for your family, for your neighbor, for your friend. You know, be better, let our children pursue the happiness like everybody because the past is gone.”
Rose was the 2009 United Nations Humanitarian of the Year. She is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She is an advocate for global health and women’s empowerment and a mother to 10 children. But those words don’t really capture her story, which is both remarkable and all too common. Rose created a documentary – “Pushing the Elephant” – that tells this story.
